CompUSA store chain to soon become history
When the retailer changed its name, added hardware to its previously software-only line-up, and went public in 1991, CompUSA turned into the largest CE store chain in the US for a while. But during the year 2000, after CompUSA started floundering, it was taken private by a group of companies owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu. Despite a string of recent industry catalysts such as Microsoft's Vista and Apple's Leopard, which have helped spurred PC sales for other retailers despite falling prices, CompUSA hasn't shown a profit since 2005. That year, its revenues amounted to $4.6 billion. Gordon Brothers, the company that now owns CompUSA's assets, helped the company to sell more than 100 stores this past spring as part of a restructuring move. CompUSA's 100-or-so remaining stores will sell off leftover product wares at discount prices until they, too, close down for good at the end of this year.
Don't believe tort-reform group about Atlantic County courts
ATRA's agenda is to make it virtually impossible for those who have been injured to find recourse in the court system. Now that ATRA and these industries have our legislators in their pockets, they are going after the last line of defense of John Q. Public - lawyers and the court system. .
Welcome to Sealand. Now Bugger Off.
Ryan Lackey, a 21-year-old MIT dropout and self-taught crypto expert, sees fantastic things for himself in 2005. For starters, he'll be filthy rich. But his future is animated by more than just money - to wit, the exploration of a huge idea he thinks will change the world. Lackey's big concept? That freedom is the next killer app. Before you get too choked up, you should know that Lackey means giving corporations and frisky individuals the "freedom" to store and move data without answering to anybody, including competitors, regulators, and lawyers. He's part of a crew of adventurers and cypherpunks that's working to transform a 60-year-old gunnery fort in the North Sea - an odd, quasi-independent outpost whose British owner calls it "the Principality of Sealand" - into something that could be possible only in the 21st century: a fat-pipe Internet server farm and global networking hub that combines the spicier elements of a Caribbean tax shelter, Cryptonomicon, and 007.
ATI Allvac recognised as ASM Historical Landmark
The purpose of this award designation is to preserve our materials heritage and to make people all over the world more aware of the many pioneering milestones of materials technology. The first ASM Historical Landmark Award was presented in 1972, marking the site of the first Heroult-type, electric steel-making furnace in the Western Hemisphere. In the 35 years since then, a total of 119 Historical Landmarks have been named, including the site we honour today. This represents the third ASM Historical Landmark in the state of North Carolina, the previous two being the Reed Gold Mine (first major discover of gold in the U.S.) and the LaQue Centre for Corrosion Technology. In 1957, the Allvac Metals Company was incorporated. From its very beginnings, Allvac was a leader in vacuum induction melting technology.
Valley View Hospital receives national award for patient care from ...
Valley View Hospital may need to do some remodeling. It may need a larger display area at the rate it keeps receiving awards. This month, Valley View is one of five hospitals nationwide and the only one in Colorado designated as a Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital for its ongoing efforts in placing patient care as the top priority. And this prestigious distinction has Valley View Chief Executive Officer Gary Brewer smiling. "It's about changing the culture of the hospital and making the patients' comfort our first priority," Brewer said. "This (award) tells us about the culture at the hospital, and it speaks volumes about the physicians, caregivers and support staff who work here." The program is based on core objectives focused on patient care set by Planetree affiliate hospitals.

Acumen, emotion
You know, I have been through a lot of campaigns, so maybe that's why I just see this from the longer-term perspective," she said on CBS. "You know, you go up and you go down." Obama also toured New Hampshire yesterday, continuing to draw enthusiastic crowds as his campaign continued to benefit from last week's win in the Iowa caucuses. The messages of the two top Democrats have devolved into one word apiece. For Obama, it is change. For Clinton, it has been ready. To demonstrate her readiness to be president, Clinton has spent her time since the Iowa caucuses at forums and rallies answering questions from voters. Many appreciate the attention, but the strategy has been time-consuming and, at times, academic. "She did kind of ramble.
